At Altamira in Ottensen, we regularly forget that we’re still in Hamburg. Especially during summer, sitting outside in front of the restaurant — or in winter beneath the glass-covered conservatory — the whole place feels far more like a cozy tapas bar tucked away on a side street somewhere in Spain than a restaurant in the middle of Ottensen. The atmosphere is loud, lively, and full of energy, making it exactly the kind of place where evenings naturally stretch on for hours. Some of our favorite team dinners and Christmas parties have taken place here, usually accompanied by lots of laughter, endless rounds of tapas, and at least one too many pitchers of sangria. Having the Ottensen S-Bahn station directly next door also makes spontaneous evenings here dangerously convenient.

The food at Altamira revolves around an enormous selection of classic Spanish tapas. From Pimientos de Padrón and Patatas Bravas to Albóndigas and changing fish or meat specialties, dishes keep arriving in the center of the table to be shared among everyone. The concept works especially well for groups because the entire evening becomes about tasting, passing plates around, and ordering “just one more thing.” Not only are the warm tapas consistently good, but the whole dining style feels relaxed and wonderfully uncomplicated. Alongside it all, Spanish red wine or the restaurant’s famously generous sangria fit perfectly — especially during long summer evenings outside.

For many years now, Altamira has been a true institution in Ottensen and helped shape Hamburg’s love for tapas culture. The restaurant itself is winding, rustic, and filled with small details that give it its warm personality. Its name references the famous Altamira cave in northern Spain, which somehow suits the restaurant’s cozy and timeless atmosphere perfectly. Weekends get busy quickly, so reservations are definitely recommended. We’re convinced that people keep coming back for this combination of Spanish warmth, lively atmosphere, and honest food — and usually end up staying far later than they originally intended.
