Badshah

Restaurant Indian St. Georg

About this location

Badshah in St. Georg is one of those places that feels almost chaotic at first glance — and that’s exactly what has earned it cult status over the years. The moment you walk in, you’re hit by a mixture of loud conversations, intense spice aromas, and constant movement that feels far more like an Indian street-food spot or train station canteen than a traditional restaurant. Stainless steel tables, bright lighting, and the nonstop flow of people make it immediately clear: this is not about quiet fine dining, but about honest, intense food without unnecessary polish. That uncompromising directness is precisely what has turned Badshah into a Hamburg institution for decades. Special thanks also to Viviane for this fantastic recommendation — she lived in India for many years and specifically recommended Badshah to us as one of the city’s most authentic Indian restaurants.

Culinarily, Badshah focuses on authentic Indian comfort food — boldly spiced, deeply aromatic, and intentionally far removed from the overly adapted curry dishes often found elsewhere. The legendary thali is especially popular, featuring multiple curries, rice, yogurt, and side dishes served on a classic metal tray. Alongside it, the freshly baked naan from the tandoor oven is absolutely essential and arrives steaming hot directly from the open kitchen. Not only do the savory dishes stand out, but the large mithai counter at the entrance filled with traditional Indian sweets has also become an essential part of the overall Badshah experience.

For many years, Badshah has remained a permanent fixture of Lange Reihe while preserving almost all of its original character. One of the most fascinating things about the restaurant is the mix of guests: office workers, students, tourists, and members of Hamburg’s Indian community often sit side by side at the same tables. The service remains fast, direct, and refreshingly uncomplicated — sometimes almost hectic, but always efficient. At the same time, Badshah continues to offer some of the best value for money in all of St. Georg. We’re convinced that this combination of noise, speed, honest cooking, and uncompromising authenticity is exactly what has made Badshah one of Hamburg’s defining Indian restaurants.
