Mei Moon

Restaurant Cantonese St. Georg

About this location

We keep coming back to Mei Moon whenever the craving for truly authentic Cantonese food becomes impossible to ignore. Since my time studying in Hong Kong, the restaurant also carries a more personal connection for me: once a year, several of my former classmates and I meet here for a reunion dinner — and that tradition alone probably says a lot about the quality and authenticity of the place. Between steaming bamboo baskets, the constant buzz of large groups, and dishes arriving quickly at the table, an evening here feels surprisingly close to the busy local restaurants you’d find in Hong Kong.

The menu at Mei Moon revolves heavily around classic Cantonese dim sum. Har Gow filled with shrimp, Siu Mai, and soft rice noodle rolls automatically end up on our table every single visit. Alongside them are BBQ specialties like roasted duck, crispy pork belly, and Char Siu. Not only do the well-known classics stand out here, but also the fact that the menu goes far beyond the standard dishes typically adapted for European tastes. Those looking for more traditional specialties will also find chicken feet, duck tongues, or beef tripe on the menu. Mei Moon works especially well for larger groups because the entire experience revolves around sharing dishes, ordering more, and tasting everything together — exactly the way meals are enjoyed in Hong Kong.

Located on Bremer Reihe just a few minutes from Hamburg Central Station, Mei Moon has long been one of the city’s key addresses for authentic Cantonese cuisine. The interior is simple, functional, and refreshingly unpretentious — large round tables, constant movement, and service that is quick, direct, and efficient. That’s exactly what gives the restaurant its charm. We’re convinced this is the place to go when you’re not looking for staged “Asian fusion” aesthetics, but for honest Cantonese food that genuinely feels like spending an evening in Hong Kong while sitting in the middle of Hamburg.
