M&V Bar on Lange Reihe is one of those places where, after just a few minutes, you somehow already feel like you belong. Especially in St. Georg — a neighborhood that has changed enormously over the years — M&V feels like one of the rare constants that never lost its original character. During summer, people spill out onto the terrace along Lange Reihe, watching the colorful flow of the street and quickly understanding why the bar has remained such an important meeting place for Hamburg’s LGBTQ+ community for decades: open to everyone, yet deeply connected to its own history and identity.

Culinarily, M&V keeps things pleasantly uncomplicated. During the day, the bar almost functions like a cozy café, serving coffee, cake, and providing the kind of atmosphere where you can easily lose track of time. In the evenings, the focus shifts toward beer, wine, and classic long drinks, often accompanied by simple dishes like tarte flambée or homemade soups. Not only do the drinks make M&V special, but also the feeling that nobody here is trying too hard to be trendy or exclusive. Everything feels refreshingly genuine and effortless.

The story behind the name is especially charming: M&V stands for Meyer & Vetter, a former wine and spirits business that originally occupied the same space the bar uses today. Many elements of the interior still subtly resemble an old trading office or wine warehouse, connecting the bar to the historic St. Georg long before the neighborhood became one of Hamburg’s best-known nightlife and restaurant districts. During Hamburg’s Christopher Street Day (Hamburg Pride) celebrations, M&V regularly transforms into the unofficial living room of the entire neighborhood. We’re convinced that this combination of history, openness, and genuine warmth is exactly what continues to make M&V Bar one of the city’s most important social spaces today.
