O-ren Ishii
About this location
We first discovered O-ren-ishii in Hamburg’s Old Town as one of those places that suddenly feels just right at lunchtime: uncomplicated, lively, and with a subtle street food vibe—without ever feeling generic. By now, it has become one of our go-to lunch spots (which is exactly why it’s now featured on Table Tales 😊). Tucked away on Kleine Reichenstraße, the setting is relaxed, though you might have to wait briefly during peak lunch hours since reservations aren’t an option. Somehow, that’s all part of the charm: walk in, find a seat, order, enjoy.
The menu focuses on Vietnamese cuisine with a modern twist, kept deliberately short and changing weekly. It’s worth checking Instagram, where the current menu is shared via Stories. Dishes range from richly marinated meats to fresh, lighter options packed with herbs and vegetables. Classics like Goi Cuon—Vietnamese summer rolls—or Sườn ram mặn, caramelized pork ribs, reflect the strong sense of tradition, while chef Kristian adds his own touch with family recipes and new ideas. It’s not just the freshness, but the balance of seasoning, herbs, and lightness that really stands out.
Since 2007, O-ren-ishii has been one of Hamburg’s defining Vietnamese spots. It’s run by Jan and his wife, whose family story is subtly woven into the space. One detail we particularly like: the name “O-ren-ishii” is a playful twist—drawing from the Japanese word “oishii” for “delicious,” combined with “Oren,” a personal reference from the owners’ circle. We’re convinced that it’s the authenticity and quality that keep people coming back—ideally on a weekday at lunchtime, with a bit of patience and a strong appetite for Vietnam.
