Piccadilly Bar

If you’re exploring Hamburg’s Reeperbahn, it’s easy to walk right past the Piccadilly Bar – and that’s exactly part of its charm. Tucked away inside a residential building on the small side street Silbersacktwiete, this historic venue feels like one of St. Pauli’s best-kept secrets. Even the entrance tells a story: the front door still features a small viewing window with a curtain on the inside. Back when queer life was far less accepted than it is today, this allowed staff to decide who could enter and ensured the bar remained a safe space for its guests. The window remains as a reminder of that history. Stepping inside, we were immediately struck by the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Despite its long past, the Piccadilly feels anything but old-fashioned. Instead, it has the comforting feel of a neighborhood living room where conversations between tables happen naturally.

The drinks menu focuses on classic beers and cocktails – straightforward, honest, and refreshingly free from unnecessary trends. Every table is served a small bowl of chips or corn snacks, a thoughtful touch that perfectly reflects the bar’s down-to-earth character. Not only do the classics shine here, but a few house specialties have earned legendary status among regulars. The extra-spicy homemade Mexikaner shot is a local favorite, while the homemade garlic schnapps is reserved for the brave. It doesn’t appear on the menu, but those in the know simply ask for it.

Widely regarded as Hamburg’s oldest gay bar, the Piccadilly has been part of St. Pauli’s nightlife for more than six decades. In the 1960s, it already served as an important refuge for the queer community and has witnessed countless stories ever since. Over the years, notable guests including Costa Cordalis and Angelika Milster have stopped by. Recently, Dominik took over the bar and continues its legacy with genuine care and respect for its history. Special events are regularly announced on Instagram. We’re convinced that what makes the Piccadilly so special today is not only its remarkable past, but also the authentic sense of community that continues to define it every evening.
