Pizza Bande

Restaurant Italian St. Pauli

About this location

At Pizza Bande near the Reeperbahn, it becomes obvious within seconds that this is not trying to be a classic Italian pizzeria — and that’s exactly why the place has developed such a loyal following in Hamburg. Hidden away in Lincolnstraße, just a few steps from the chaos of St. Pauli nightlife, the restaurant feels loud, unapologetic, creative, and wonderfully unpolished. Stickers cover the walls, punk and indie music blast through the speakers, and people squeeze together on simple wooden benches while waiting for their pizzas. The atmosphere feels far more like a neighborhood gathering spot than a polished restaurant concept, capturing exactly the rebellious energy that defines this part of Hamburg.

Culinarily, Pizza Bande is known for pushing pizza far beyond the usual margherita-and-salami routine. The menu constantly changes with wildly creative monthly specials featuring combinations like smoked tofu, pear, walnuts, homemade sauces, or other toppings you would normally never expect to work together — yet somehow they do. The ultra-thin and crispy crust forms the perfect base for these experiments and gives the pizzas their unmistakable signature style. At the same time, Pizza Bande became one of Hamburg’s early pioneers for genuinely good vegan pizza, with high-quality cheese alternatives available for almost every creation. Alongside the fixed specials, guests can also completely customize their own pizzas, which only adds to the playful and personal feeling of the entire concept.

Pizza Bande has always felt less like a business and more like part of St. Pauli’s local culture. The small restaurant regularly develops lines stretching onto the street, where guests wait with an Astra beer or Fritz-Kola in hand while their pager eventually lights up. Despite its popularity, the place has kept its independent, almost collective spirit alive over the years. Especially the famous “Pizza of the Month” has become something of a ritual for many regulars and is heavily celebrated on social media. We’re convinced that Pizza Bande became such a Hamburg institution because it combines creative comfort food with exactly the kind of raw, authentic Kiez atmosphere that simply cannot be staged artificially.
