That contrast is exactly what makes a first visit to Chug Club so memorable: the moment you step through the door, the noise of the Reeperbahn suddenly disappears and gives way to an atmosphere that feels focused, intimate, and surprisingly calm. Dark velvet fabrics, warm brass details, and cozy little corners make the space feel elegant without ever becoming stiff or pretentious. One detail we especially appreciate is the attentiveness of the team: alongside every drink, water is continuously served and refilled without even having to ask, and the guidance from the staff feels genuinely enthusiastic and incredibly knowledgeable rather than performative.

When it comes to drinks, everything at Chug Club revolves around the concept of the “chug” — a small cocktail somewhere between a shot and a full-sized drink. That concept allows guests to explore multiple flavor profiles throughout the evening without feeling overwhelmed after only one or two rounds. We especially recommend the rotating “Chug Flight,” which features three different mini cocktails based on tequila or mezcal. Not only is this exciting for agave-spirit enthusiasts, but also for anyone who still associates tequila mainly with salt and lime. Many ingredients are homemade, the drinks are impressively complex, and the overall style feels far more experimental than a traditional cocktail bar.

Located just steps away from the Reeperbahn, Chug Club has long established itself as one of the most respected bars in Germany’s cocktail scene. Founder Betty Enkelmann is considered one of the defining figures of Hamburg’s modern bar culture, and the numerous awards the bar has received definitely feel deserved. At the same time, the place never feels overly exclusive or elitist. Instead, you’ll find a relaxed mix of cocktail nerds, creatives, and performers from nearby theaters like Schmidts Tivoli or Stage Operettenhaus enjoying the atmosphere away from the typical chaos of St. Pauli nightlife. We’re convinced that Chug Club feels so special because drinking here becomes less about consumption and much more about genuine discovery.
